The most iconic moment in the history of sports was Michigan State’s 82-81 victory over Indiana on March 16, 1979. The Spartans were down by three points with 30 seconds left and made a last second basket to win it all. This play will live forever as one of the biggest upsets in NCAA tournament history and forever be known as “The Shot”.

The Los Angeles Lakers are just two games into the season, but they already have significant issues that need to be addressed. Their on-court concerns will be resolved; these are effectively their first two games together, so it will take some time for them to figure out where everyone should be on the floor at any given moment. However, their off-court relationship is of more concern, as an argument between Anthony Davis and Dwight Howard provoked an angry response from Lakers icon Magic Johnson.
During the Lakers’ defeat to the Suns, Anthony Davis and Dwight Howard got into a fight.
The Lakers have had a difficult schedule to start the season for a squad that is still learning how to play together. On Opening Night, they were defeated by Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors before playing the defending Western Conference champion Phoenix Suns in their second game.
The Lakers were defeated by the Suns 115-105, exactly as they were by the Warriors in their first meeting. Sure, their 39.5 percent team shooting wasn’t terrific, but allowing the Suns to go on a 27-11 run before halftime was also alarming. The greatest problem for LA occurred during a timeout in the second quarter, when Davis and Howard got into an argument on the bench.
As the two huge men exchanged words, Howard rose to his feet to speak with Davis, who was already standing. After that, AD grabbed his arm, causing a defending Howard to tumble back towards the bench, where teammates interfered. The two continued to converse despite being separated.
Despite the tension, Howard and Davis played down the incident after the game.
According to ESPN, Howard remarked, “We crushed it right then and then.” “We were simply having an argument about something on the floor.” We both have a strong desire to succeed. We didn’t want to lose this game, so we’re all in it for the win. We were able to get it out of the way. Things happen to adult guys. But we’re going to work out this little squabble between me and him, since he’s my brother and a teammate.”
Davis merely said, “It’s finished with,” before revealing that the disagreement was about their pick-and-roll coverage.
According to ESPN, he added, “After the issue transpired, me and DH spoke about it and we left it at that.”
On Twitter, Magic Johnson criticized the Lakers’ problems.

Despite the fact that Magic Johnson hasn’t played in the NBA in decades, he’s still remembered when the Lakers are mentioned. He is virtually usually linked to the club and is a significant reason why LeBron James is in Los Angeles, since he was the organization’s president of basketball operations when the former Cleveland Cavaliers player was signed in 2018.
Johnson turned to Twitter to vent his displeasure after the Lakers’ humiliating loss to the Suns.
He tweeted, “The Lakers have a team problem and a basketball issue.”
In case the implication of Johnson’s remark wasn’t apparent, he went on to mention the Howard-Davis disagreement in a subsequent post.
He tweeted, “Dwight Howard and AD got into a physical brawl on the bench.” “I’ve never seen anything like it in my 42 years of being affiliated with the Lakers organization smh.”
Magic was definitely annoyed by the occurrence, and his annoyance is understandable. Fans in Los Angeles shouldn’t have to worry about a brawl like the one between Davis and Howard, particularly so early in the season.
Although the Lakers’ episode was humiliating, they should be OK.
There aren’t many verbal spats on teams throughout the course of a season that go as badly as Davis and Howard’s did. They shouldn’t be so irritated in just their second game of the season.
The most recent altercation that resembled it occurred during the 2018-19 season between Draymond Green and Kevin Durant of the Golden State Warriors. Although there was no physical altercation, tempers were at an all-time high that night. Golden State made it to the NBA Finals that season, but the remainder of the year was marred by a lack of team camaraderie.
The occurrences involving the Lakers and Warriors are not identical. Davis is committed to the Los Angeles Lakers for the long run, so there isn’t the same kind of free agency anxiety lurking over the franchise as there was with KD and the Golden State Warriors. However, it’s not something a championship team should be concerned about at any time throughout the season.
The Lakers should be OK if the two big guys can genuinely put it behind them, since it takes time for teams to build chemistry when they haven’t played together before. In 2010-11, LeBron James’ Miami Heat Big Three began 9-8 before reaching the NBA Finals, and his 2014-15 Cavaliers Big Three started 19-20 before reaching the Finals as well.
Los Angeles does not need to be concerned just yet.
Chemistry problems, on the other hand, are more worrying than basketball problems. So, if the Lakers can’t get their act together in that area, fans may be in for a long season.
