The Cleveland Browns were one of the most active teams in the NFL draft, selecting 11 players over three rounds. However, their efforts proved futile as they lost their top undrafted free agent mere months after paying $192,000 to land him. The player was waived after failing his physical and now the Browns are left with nothing to show for their investment.

The Cleveland Browns felt they got a steal in defensive lineman Marvin Wilson coming out of the 2021 NFL Draft.
Wilson was signed as an undrafted free agent following the draft, and the Browns gave him a whopping $192,000 guarantee to ensure he signed with them. Wilson is currently a member of the Philadelphia Eagles, having joined the team a few months ago.

Following the post-draft frenzy of undrafted free agency signings, Pro Football Focus compiled a list of the top ten UDFA signings.
Wilson was ranked No. 2:
During the 2018 and 2019 seasons, the Florida State product was one of the top defenders in the nation, receiving a PFF rating of 90.1 and 90.7, respectively.
Wilson was PFF’s top-rated inside defender and No. 9 overall prospect heading into the 2020 season, but his performance fell dramatically during the year. In just six games, he had 10 total pressures and a PFF grade of 67.7.
Wilson, on the other hand, was frequently the most powerful player on the field from 2018 to 2019. He tossed linemen with ease at times, showing a pass-rush toolkit not often seen in 6-foot-5, 305-pound interior defensive lineman, and ending that two-year span with a 15.9% pass-rush victory rate, which ranked sixth among the 294 interior defenders who rushed the passer at least 300 times.

Wilson’s acquisition to the Browns’ roster was hailed by PFF as a “great effort” by the Cleveland front management. Everything was OK in northern Ohio.
By trying to pass Wilson through waivers, the Cleveland Browns took a risk.
The #Browns have waived rookie defensive tackle Marvin Wilson, according to a source.
Wilson, who was the most sought-after undrafted player in May, is wanted back on Cleveland’s practice squad, but the other 31 clubs have first dibs on him on waivers.

Wilson’s $192,000 guarantee (plus a $30,000 signing bonus) demonstrated the Browns’ confidence in him, but it didn’t guarantee him a place on the roster.
By the time roster cutdown day arrived, the Browns had chosen to take a chance on Wilson and place him on waivers. Wilson was reportedly wanted back on the Browns’ practice squad if he went unclaimed, according to Pro Football Talk.
Wilson was eventually left unclaimed. He did not, however, agree to return to the Browns.
The Philadelphia Eagles have signed Marvin Wilson.
Wilson was allowed to join with the club of his choice after going through waivers unclaimed. In most cases, a player in Wilson’s position would join the team’s practice squad, with whom he had been training all summer.
Wilson went in a different direction.
The Eagles signed the highly regarded UDFA to their practice squad. Wilson hasn’t explained why he thinks the Eagles’ PS is a better match than the Browns’. Wilson may have been drawn to studying from experienced defensive tackles Fletcher Cox and Jared Hargrave, or he could have been offered an easier route to an NFL roster place by Eagles general manager Howie Roseman. In any case, the Browns gave up $192,000 in salary space to a rookie currently playing in the NFC.
This isn’t the end of the world for Cleveland, obviously. This season, they’re anticipated to be a postseason contender, with a far stronger squad than Philadelphia. However, the way they lost Wilson, the second-best UDFA signing from this year’s draft, is still a little humiliating.
Browns, best of luck next season.
