Former NFL Referee Provides Solace to Mike Tomlin for ‘Confusing’ DK Metcalf Overview in Seahawks-Steelers Game

In a game that was very close, the Seahawks won in the final seconds with an improbable touchdown. The referee’s decision to call a pass interference on Pittsburgh Steelers receiver DK Metcalf with 1 second left in the game led to confusion and controversy among fans and players alike.

The Sunday Night Football match between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Seattle Seahawks was the buzz of the weekend. It wasn’t for the sake of the game, however. Instead, it was for a strange regulation finish with a DK Metcalf grab and fumble, followed by one of the most perplexing reviews in recent memory. After the game, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin did not hold back in expressing his real views about the nonsense that occurred at the conclusion of the fourth quarter.

Sure, Pittsburgh won the game, but it might have cost them the win, and Tomlin would have been much more enraged. However, he wasn’t the only one who had anything to say about the issue, as one veteran NFL official spoke about what happened at Heinz Field.

Gene Steratore provides comfort to Mike Tomlin.

Gene Steratore, a former NFL referee and current rules commentator, is one of the first to speak out about the Sunday night misunderstanding. This “review” will be questioned for a long time, and the NFL may look into the officiating a little further this season in order to make some adjustments.

Steratore reiterated Tomlin’s sentiments on the issue, admitting that Tomlin was correct to question the review process in the first place (h/t Trib Live’s Tim Benz).

“Because of the clarity of the catch itself, the start of the review appeared perplexing.”

Everyone was perplexed, and Cris Collinsworth tried his hardest to explain what was going on throughout the show. Metcalf fumbled the ball, which was recovered by Freddie Swain, who then carried the ball back to the line of scrimmage for Geno Smith to spike to end the time.

Following that sequence, the officials – for some reason – reviewed the Metcalf catch, and Tomlin was enraged when they added time to the clock, allowing the Seahawks to tie the game with a Jason Myers field goal.

The officiating will be scrutinized much more closely.

As if the NFL’s officiating wasn’t bad enough, this will draw even more attention. The league introduced a taunting penalty in the summer, which has proven extremely contentious during the first six weeks of the season.

Now, after the zebras’ recent gaffe, everyone is doubting the officials’ accuracy, particularly in high-stakes scenarios like the one that occurred on Sunday night.

Tomlin was enraged, calling the incident a “embarrassment” — which it was — and Steratore hinted that the Steelers’ head coach had every reason to be upset (h/t Trib Live).

“You make a good point.”

Mike Tomlin’s remarks on Gene Steratore

Just keep an eye on the game. Metcalf went many feet and attempted a football motion before fumbling, casting doubt on the catch review. It was ridiculous, strange, and perplexing. It’s all there.

Steratore agrees with Tomlin, and after a 15-year career as an NFL referee, he knows a thing or two about the job. He now works for CBS as an analyst, and he appears on the show to debate calls like these.

Steratore’s remarks were not broadcast live since the game was broadcast on NBC, but he still took the time to address the hotly discussed issue afterward.

Regardless, the Steelers won, but Tomlin may face a punishment for voicing his displeasure with the officials.

Going ahead, all eyes will be on the NFL’s officiating.

The ball is now in the NFL’s league office’s court. Tomlin’s remarks may result in a monetary penalty. Instead, it would be remarkable if he didn’t get some kind of penalty.

The NFL, on the other hand, must notice Steratore’s remarks and may decide to investigate the matter further.

Officiating has been a heated subject this year — and for the previous several years. These is the ideal moment for the league to sit down and take action against instances like this. The Seahawks could have won the game and enraged Tomlin even more if it hadn’t been for TJ Watt’s strip-sack of Geno Smith in overtime.
