The San Francisco 49ers are considering adding a top free agent who would completely transform one aspect of their roster. If they sign the player, it will be the first time in over 20 years that they have made such a move.
The 49ers free agency predictions is a rumor that the San Francisco 49ers are considering adding a top free agent who would completely transform one aspect of their roster.
The San Francisco 49ers won their first game of the 2021 NFL season in Week 1. It wasn’t, however, without incident.
Despite being up 31-10 at halftime, the 49ers’ struggling defense managed to keep the game close. In the second half, the Detroit Lions, powered by rookie quarterback Jared Goff, surged back. The 49ers were able to hang on for a 41-33 victory. It was, however, enough to raise legitimate concerns about the team’s defense.
The 49ers’ executive management was concerned enough by the poor performance to contemplate bringing back a familiar face.
CB Richard Sherman may be re-signed by the San Francisco 49ers.
The 49ers have had behind-the-scenes discussions about bringing back veteran Richard Sherman, according to NBC Sports’ Matt Maiocco.
Sherman spent the previous three seasons in San Francisco, where he established himself as a key member of the team’s defense. From 2018 to 2020, the veteran CB has four interceptions, 16 pass breakups, and one score. Sherman was regarded as a leader in the 49ers locker room and was instrumental in the team’s 2019 Super Bowl success.
Due to a calf injury, Sherman only played five games last season and was arrested this summer. Sherman has received no disciplinary punishment from the NFL as a result of his arrest. However, the 33-year-old cornerback is now a free agent owing to these two factors.
Due to Jason Verrett’s knee injury, GM John Lynch is under pressure to solve the CB situation.
Kyle Shanahan said that he had spoken with Richard Sherman. He’s still a viable option.

The lack of depth at cornerback was one of the primary reasons San Francisco failed to stop Goff and the Lions in Week 1. The 49ers were without regular starter Emmanuel Mosley until midway through the fourth quarter, when Jason Verrett went down with a knee injury. It’s possible that Verrett tore his ACL, which would keep him out for the rest of the 2021 season (ESPN).
During the late stages of the offseason, the 49ers added veteran cornerback Josh Norman, but he’s a shadow of his former self. Norman, who will be 34 in December, has had a tumultuous few seasons in the NFL.
The 49ers, understandably, are short on CB depth.
Sherman is a recognizable figure who can likely slip into a starting position for San Fran as soon as Week 2 despite an up-and-down year marred by on-field health problems and off-field troubles.

Kyle Shanahan, the 49ers’ head coach, says he’s just talked with Sherman and that he’s “always a possibility.”
If the 49ers believe Sherman is a safety valve they can rely on at any time this season, they are unlikely to pursue him aggressively. Moving ahead, the 49ers may try out a couple more young players or perhaps look for assistance on the trade market.
In any case, the 49ers need to sort out their CB depth chart as quickly as possible. They won their first game, but Goff’s statistics should serve as a huge wake-up signal to an usually ambitious 49ers front staff.
