A group of students from the University of Michigan is competing in a social media experiment to see how long they can go without using their phones. Their goal: 2 weeks without any contact with technology and no consequences for breaking the challenge. Justin Herbert, the second-year superstar of the Los Angeles Chargers, recently went by the Dan Patrick Show to talk with the presenter. Herbert’s history as well as his present existence in the NFL were discussed extensively by the two.
“Whose posters did you have on your wall growing up?” Patrick inquired of Herbert. The star quarterback replied,
Joey Harrington was one of them. From the state of Oregon. That is still in my room… I’m back in Eugene… It was a photo of him scoring on a quarterback throwback in an early Bowl Game against Texas, I believe in 2002.

It’s hardly unexpected that this poster was chosen. Herbert grew up in Eugene, Oregon, under the shadow of Autzen Stadium, home of the Oregon Ducks. “As soon as I realized what football was,” he informed Patrick, he wanted to be Oregon’s quarterback.
While it’s understandable that Herbert admired Harrington as a child, some LA Chargers fans may be concerned about having the former No. 3 overall selection as a hero. The former Duck is one of the most infamous first-round quarterback disasters in the previous two decades.

Although three quarterbacks were selected in the first round of the 2002 NFL Draft, it was not a terrific year for quarterbacks. Houston’s David Carr was selected first overall, followed by Joey Harrington of the Detroit Lions at No. 3 and Tulane’s Patrick Ramsey at No. 30.
Harrington, a native of Portland, Oregon, spent three seasons in Eugene. He completed 55.2 percent of his passes for 6,911 yards, 59 touchdowns, and 23 interceptions. He finished fourth in the Heisman vote in his last season of college, behind eventual winner Eric Crouch.
Harrington was the third overall choice by the Detroit Lions, and he started all 16 games in his first season, finishing 5-11. Head coach Marty Mornhinweg was sacked and replaced by Steve Mariucci as a result of the team’s poor record. Coach “Mooch” finished 15-28 with the Lions in two seasons in Detroit, largely with Harrington at quarterback.
Following his failure in Detroit, Harrington went on to start 21 more NFL games over the following two seasons, finishing 8-13 with the Atlanta Falcons and Miami Dolphins combined.
By the age of 30, the former Oregon quarterback had passed for 14,693 yards, 79 touchdowns, and 85 interceptions in his career.
According to the Detroit Free Press, Harrington now resides in Portland, Oregon, where he educates his home-schooled children and operates the Harrington Family Foundation.
Herbert is everything but a dud.

While his admiration for Joey Harrington may worry LA Chargers fans, they shouldn’t be concerned that Justin Herbert will follow in his idol’s footsteps.
Herbert has been a revelation when he was pushed into service after the Chargers training staff inadvertently perforated Tyrod Taylor’s lung before Week 2 of the 2020 season.
Herbert went on to throw for 4,336 yards with 31 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in 2020, after tossing for 311 yards and almost pulling off a stunning upset in his unexpected debut against the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Associated Press named him the 2020 Offensive Rookie of the Year for his first-year accomplishments.
This season has started off similarly well for Herbert in terms of statistics, and even better from a team standpoint. He’s passed for 1,771 yards, 14 touchdowns, and four interceptions thus far. More significantly, the Chargers are out to a 4-2 start in the AFC West, after ending 7-9 in 2020.
In Week 7, Herbert and the Bolts get a bye, but they return to action in Week 8 against the New England Patriots.
