‘I Just Don’t Know If They Fit Well Together’

The new Big East was announced last Monday, and the team breakdowns have been released. The conference consists of traditional Catholic schools in the northeast region, with Syracuse being one of them. FBS football is just around the corner for these institutions that are associated with national powerhouses like Notre Dame and Rutgers.

“I just don’t know if they fit well together” is a quote from one of the characters in “The Fault In Our Stars”.

The new-look Los Angeles Lakers tend to elicit differing reactions from fans. With LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and Russell Westbrook leading the way, many feel they should be the favorites to win the NBA championship this season, while others are skeptical of the NBA’s newest superteam.

Van Gundy, Jeff, who watches a lot of basketball these days, recently gave his honest opinion on the new Lakers, and it’s apparent which side of the debate he’s on.

The Lakers’ season has been up and down thus far.

With LeBron James approaching 40, Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka realized he needed to put his chips in the center of the table as soon as possible and put together a championship-caliber group.

This summer, he purged the Lakers’ roster and brought in veterans like Russell Westbrook, Carmelo Anthony, Rajon Rondo, DeAndre Jordan, and Dwight Howard to help James win his fifth NBA championship. Early in the season, the experiment has had mixed results. Through seven games, Los Angeles is 4-3, and the club hasn’t looked particularly good when its three superstars have all been on the floor at the same time.

The Lakers still have six months to gel and discover their identity before the playoffs begins, but fans in Los Angeles would have preferred a smoother start.

The Lakers’ coach, Jeff Van Gundy, gives his brutally honest appraisal.

Stan Van Gundy isn't a believer in the new-look Lakers. Jeff Van Gundy speaks with Mitchell Leff/Getty Images before a game between the Miami Heat and the Philadelphia 76ers in 2019.

Jeff Van Gundy, a former NBA head coach, isn’t afraid to voice his thoughts. In his ESPN announcing job, he’s developed a reputation as a hot take artist, so you know he means it when he delivers an edgy remark.

Van Gundy gave his honest view on the new-look Lakers and their championship prospects during a recent appearance on The Lowe Post podcast with Zach Lowe.

I’m simply curious whether the Lakers are any good. They have a very advantageous schedule to begin the year, but the main concern I have is whether or not they are good. Because it’s not about amassing a list of names or talents. It’s all about whether or not things go together. When they play, they have an ancient, old-looking squad. To me, speed and quickness are going to be a problem for them. I’m simply not sure whether they’ll work well together.

Jeff Van Gundy

Van Gundy went on to suggest that the Lakers’ deal for Westbrook was a decisive win for the Washington Wizards, and that he isn’t sure whether the move makes the Lakers a championship candidate this season.

He stated, “I believe they’re a terrific squad.” “I believe it’s outrageously overestimating their squad to claim they’re a championship-level club right now.” I just believe it is asking too much of too many people.”

For Lakers fans, patience is essential.

With all of the roster changes the Lakers have had this summer, it’s expected that they’ve gotten off to a rocky start. On the floor, James and Westbrook have struggled to strike a comfortable rhythm. The bench relies much too heavily on Anthony, who is 37 years old, to produce all of the team’s scoring. So far, LA’s defense has allowed the fifth-most points of any club in the NBA.

The Lakers have a lot of problems early in the season, but James usually manages to get his teams to play their best when it means most. “R-E-L-A-X,” as Aaron Rodgers wisely put it.
